Safer Internet Day

Safer Internet Day takes place each year in February to promote safer and more responsible us of online technology and mobile phones, especially amongst children and young people across the world

Since the first edition in 2004, participation in this event has been steadily growing, with an increase in general awareness, stronger involvement of relevant stakeholders in the field of internet safety and a high level of media interest.

In 2008 over 120 organisations in 56 countries took part in Safer Internet Day celebrations, organising local, national and pan-European events ranging from safety sessions in schools and competitions for young people to public meetings and conferences.

In 2009 we are hoping for an even larger number of participants in the Safer Internet Day activities in an even greater number of countries.

  • a collaboration platform that will be created by INSAFE for increasing the visibility of Safer Internet Day and facilitating communication between stakeholders.

If you are interested in taking part in Safer Internet Day 2009 you should contact your country node or if there isn't one, send your registration form  preferably before 20 October 2008 to the helpdesk SID-helpdesk@eun.org.

Process and calendar:
In order to increase the impact of the Safer Internet Day through a more integrated approach, the following process has been envisaged together with an indicative timetable:

1) The Secretariat of the Safer Internet Day will be carried out by the co-ordinator of the INSAFE network, the European Schoolnet, which will answer all questions sent to SID-helpdesk@eun.org and help you to get in touch with other stakeholders interested in building up the Safer Internet Day Committee in your country. Information regarding Safer Internet Day 2009 will be available at www.saferinternetday.org.

2) Those wishing to take part in Safer Internet Day activities are kindly invited to contact their country node, or if there isn't one fill the participation form and return it by e-mail to SID-helpdesk@eun.org preferably before 20 October 2008. Please note that only organisations (NGOs, industry, researchers, public authorities) can be accepted as Safer Internet Day supporters 2009.

3) The Secretariat will help stakeholders from the same country to get in touch with each other. Stakeholders will inform the Secretariat of the composition of the committees and of the planned activities and communicate the name of the national contact person.

4) From 3 November 2008 onwards, the Secretariat will inform them whether the registration of the Safer Internet Day Committee and national contact person has been validated, and post the contact details of the national contact person at www.saferinternetday.org. In certain cases, additional information or action may be requested before validation: for instance because of insufficient multi-stakeholder involvement or duplicate applications for the same country.

5) From mid-November onwards, Safer Internet Day Committees will be able to create profiles on the collaboration platform and they will receive the quiz.

6) Safer Internet Day Committees will also receive further information about the video clip that will be formally launched during the central event of Safer Internet Day organised on 10 February 2009 in Luxembourg.

7) By 25 February 2009 each Safer Internet Day Committee will provide feedback to INSAFE on the impact of the day.
